What HIPAA Compliance Alone Won’t Catch
HIPAA compliance is important—but it doesn't guarantee your medical office is fully protected. In today's digital world, cyber threats are more sophisticated, and medical practices are increasingly targeted. Let’s walk through the hidden IT vulnerabilities most offices overlook, and how to fix them before it's too late.
In 2023, 725 data breaches were reported to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), with over 133 million records exposed or impermissibly disclosed. (HIPAA Journal)
Start with antivirus software. Many offices rely on outdated or free solutions that don't keep up with evolving threats. Without real-time monitoring, malware can slip through undetected.
Another weak spot is backup. Ransomware can lock up your local systems. If your backup isn't automated, encrypted, and stored offsite, you risk permanent data loss.
Now consider access controls. Too often, staff members have access to systems they don't need. Weak permissions management increases the risk of internal and external breaches.
